The AI Forward Deployed Engineer roadmap

Everyone is building AI models. The scarce job now is making them actually work inside a company. That job has a name. 👇

AI FDE = AI Engineer + Solution Architect + Product Thinker + Customer Problem Solver

That's an AI Forward Deployed Engineer. 😀

Why "now"?

Look at what the labs did in the last 4 months:

  • 🟢 OpenAI - launched a Deployment Company with $4B initial investment and ~150 FDEs from day one (May 2026)
  • 🟠 AWS - $1B to embed AI FDEs with customers; "compresses timelines from months to days" (Jun 2026)
  • 🟣 Anthropic - co-launched Ode, an enterprise AI services firm, with Blackstone & Hellman & Friedman (Jul 2026)
  • 🔵 Google Cloud - Thomas Kurian: hiring more FDEs "to help us scale customer AI transformation" (May 2026)

The roadmap - 6 stages, in order:

  1. Foundations - Python, Linux, Git, SQL, REST/FastAPI
  2. Cloud & delivery - AWS/GCP/Azure, Docker, CI/CD, IAM & OAuth
  3. LLM engineering - prompting, structured outputs, and above all evals (eval-driven development)
  4. RAG & knowledge - vector + hybrid search, knowledge graphs, multimodal
  5. Agents & integration - tool use, LangGraph / Agents SDK, MCP servers, legacy systems, human-in-the-loop
  6. Production & trust - guardrails, security, observability, cost control

➕ The layer that makes you an FDE, not just an AI engineer: discovery workshops, solution architecture, product thinking, stakeholder comms - and the willingness to travel. 🎯 Prove it with 2 end-to-end capstones a customer could actually run.

What postings ask for (Bloomberry, 1,000 FDE jobs):

  • Python 66%
  • TypeScript 35%
  • AWS 32%
  • AI agents 35%
  • LLMs 31%
  • RAG 12%.

My take

FDE is the fastest route to the one skill AI can't automate yet - sitting with a real customer and turning a model into an outcome.

Would you take an FDE role? 👇
